Showcase

My journey as a lifelong learner flourished while being a part of Michigan State University’s Master of Arts in Educational Technology Program (MAET). I was challenged with coursework that allowed me to create, learn and plan lessons that allowed me to grow as an educator in the 21st century.

Throughout my showcase page you will have the opportunity to observe the graduate work I completed during my time in the MAET program. I choose specific pieces that reflect my experience and journey. The pieces selected are organized into categories that summarize the three important components that I learned in my master’s program. Those three categories include; learning, creativity and lesson planning.

Learning:

This section of my showcase displays topics that I independently and collaboratively learned during my master’s program. It focuses on understanding learning, networking to gain knowledge and collaboratively learning about a wicked problem in education. Throughout the MAET program, I immersed myself in learning opportunities that would help me grow as an educator. Below are a few pieces I am most proud of.

Failure As A Learning Mode

In this collaborative research project, my group and I created a website that represented what we learned about a wicked problem in education; using failure as a learning mode. We researched about what failure is, why society allows failure to have a negative connotation, and possible solutions. We created a multimodal website that represented our learning, collected data, research and solutions for the wicked problem. This showcases my ability to research and work collaboratively. Professional Learning Network

In this blog post, I share my reflections on the meaning of a professional learning network (PLN). I created a visual of my own PLN using an application called Popplet, which includes social media, my colleagues, professional development and family. Personal learning networks are important to how and who someone learns new information from. This showcases my ability to reflect on my PLN and represent it in a multimodal format. Click here to see my Popplet in more detail, and read about my goals and reflection for my professional learning network.

Learning About Learning

In this essay, I summarize what I understand about learning, understanding and conceptual change. Specifically, I describe how learning is beyond memorizing facts and knowledge is happening in settings with different cultural and social norms. Lastly, I talk about the importance of knowledge that educators must acquire about learning to benefit their students. This showcases my ability to reflect on a topic based of many theories about learning. Click here or the image to read my full essay.

Creativity:

This section of my showcase displays projects that I had the opportunity to create during my master’s program. Through the MAET program, I was able to draw upon my own creativity and think of new ways to incorporate creativity into my classroom, as you will see through these pieces.

Cooking With TPACK
Learning Space Design
Networked Learning Project

TPACK stands for Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge. In this video, you will observe the use of unconventional kitchen tools to cut vegetables. The purpose of this creative activity was to repurpose items for a different use; which is vital when creating learning experiences when using technology. This showcases my ability to repurpose materials and use them in a different way. To view my blog post with a further explanation of TPACK and with the video embedded, click here or click the video to watch.

I used SketchUp to design a classroom that would foster collaboration, flexibility and engagement. I was able to create a space, based off of my own classroom, that had flexible seating options, a Maker Space area, collaborative spaces and no real “front” of the classroom. This was created with all barriers removed such as; cost, materials, time..etc. This showcases my ability to use a design program to create a collaboratively learning space for students. Click here to see my learning space design in more detail or click the image.

In this video, I describe the process I went through to crochet a blanket by only using YouTube videos and help forums during my Networked Learning Project (NLP). Participating in a NLP inherently led to a lot of self-reflection. I watched a few videos to learn how to crochet a blanket. I was able to grasp the beginner techniques and start my blanket! However; as most educators know, learning is not a quick “one and done” process. This showcases my ability to learn how to create something through videos! Click here to see my NLP in more detail or click the video to watch.

Lesson Planning:

This section of my showcase displays the lessons that I had the opportunity to create during my master’s program. The lessons incorporate technology, literacy, and social emotional skills.  They were developed for myself and other educators to use in their classroom. In the lessons, students take control of their own learning and use technology to enhance their learning.

21st Century Lesson Plan
Maker Lesson Plan
Literacy Case Study Lesson Plans

In this blog post, you will find a social emotional lesson plan that incorporates the five digital practices using the application SeeSaw. The five digital practices include; access, analyze, create, reflect and act. In this lesson, students will be able to identify their feelings, tools and strategies to calm themselves and use technology to represent their learning. This showcases my ability to create a lesson plan using academic standards and the five digital practices. Click here to read the blog post in more details or here to view the lesson plan.

In order to help students’ engage and practice in summarizing ficitional text, I created a lesson plan featuring a MakeyMakey circuit kit. In this lesson, students work collaboratively to represent the beginning, middle and end of a story. Students are also asked to work with the QuickTime Player and SoundPlant applications. This showcases my ability to create a lesson plan using reading standards and technology to allow students to represent their learning. Click here to view the Maker Lesson Plan in full detail with images and videos.

In this project, I worked with a struggling literacy learning in my classroom to provide interventions based on formative and summative assessments. By drawing on best practice for literacy instruction, I developed 2 lesson plans for my literacy learning and analyzed data to assess the effectiveness of my instruction. This showcases my ability to collect data on a student, create and conduct lessons of intervention to help a student succeed in reading. Click here to read about my literacy learner and lesson plans in more detail.
